Measure your Heart and Respiratory Rates in Google Fit with Android Phone’s Camera

Google Fit is a health-tracking downloadable app designed by Google. It is similar and Google’s answer to Apple’s Health app. It is possible everyone doesn’t want to use a smartwatch on his wrist. Earlier, everyone needs to wear a smartwatch to track the heart and respiratory rates on the go. But thankfully Google has come up with a new smartphone feature that can track your heart and respiratory rates without a smartwatch. And now the Android smartphone users can also track heart and respiratory rates with smartphone cameras. Here is how you can track your heart and respiratory rates using your Android phone.

How to use your Google Pixel camera to measure heart and respiratory rates.

  • Firstly, open the Google Fit app on your Android smartphone.
  • When you open Google Fit, you find the “Get Started” option under the “check your heart rate” if you are measuring the heart rate for the first time.
  • Go through the informational screens and then tap Next for each screen.
  • Now place your fingertip on the rear camera of your Google Pixel. You should hold your hand steady and apply light pressure with your finger.
  • Next, you get “Start Measurement” tap on it.
  • It starts detecting the pulse in your fingertip. Here, you should keep your hand still and apply light pressure.
  • Once your measure is done (you can see the percentage on the screen). Tap Save measurement.

Once you tap on Save measurement, your heart rate reading will be saved on the Google Fit app’s main page and if you want to check all your measurements, just tap the arrow there.

Here is how you can measure the respiratory rate with the Google Pixel camera.

  • Again, open the Google Fit app on your Android phone if you have downloaded it.
  • If you measure the respiratory rate for the first time, tap on “Get Started” shown under the Check your respiratory rate section.
  • You find some information screens showing how to position yourself in front of the camera, read the information, and tap Next for each screen.
  • Prop up your phone, providing back support at a proper angle. Tilt it up so that it gets positioned on your face and chest to measure small movements in your chest. Make sure you have not covered your face.
  • Lean your phone on a stable surface to see yourself in it when measurement starts.
  • Then, tap on “Start measurement” and stay in the frame while breathing normally.
  • Once you have recorded your measurement, tap Save measurement. (Note: you can find your measurement is finished with the running percentage of recording you observe there.)

Conclusion

You should note here that heart and respiratory rate features are currently available only on Pixel smartphones, including Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. In the future, these features will gradually roll out to other Android smartphones.
